Florida 8^th May 1834
My dear Henry
I a few days since received a letter
from BJS in which he confidentially stated
that he had spent some days in Albany, that
the Whigs were in fine spirits, and the Tory
party as much dejected. That a Committee had
been sent to Judge Bewel to ask his consent to
a nomination for Gov – at the ensuing Ensuing
that he had accepted. That a committee had
been chosen to draft an Address to the people
and that notwithstanding the hard times
the Whigs co will return home rejoicing.
My principle object in writing you at
this time is to say that according to my view of
the subject to make M^r Buel a candidate for
Gov will be to defeat the Election. I am sensible
that the conduct of the Administration and of the
Regency in this State has been such as to drive
vast numbers from their ranks and was the
Election now to take place they might be sure of
defeat. But it is long before the Election[ . ] The Tory
minions of the Adm^_ have great resourcys
to give Weight to their cause. And to oppose
Gov. Marcy it will require a man well known
to the people of sterling integrity and of great weight
of Character. These prerequisites Judge Buel
does not possess. Judge Spencer John C Spencer
John Townsend Mr Granger and Many others in
the State would in the eye of the people be far
preferable. The people though opposed to many
acts of Gen Jackson are not stable in their patrio-
tism him and a mear trifle will will waft them
back to the faderal ranks. Let me hear from
you as son as possible.
