Florida Monday 23 April 1838
My very dear & afflicted relation
When I parted with you on Saturday evening I fondly
hoped to have been able to visit to you again in your
bereaved and afflicted state on Sunday, but having some
business by the county house, the evening being cold &
the exercise to much for my strength I come home with
a chill have been very sick and feeble since, and am
now (as you will see by trembling hand) but just able
to be up. The inscrutible hand of providence is past
finding out, and why it is that I who have been
twenty years on the brink of the grave should yet
retaine the vital spark while thousand of blooming
youth, with all the ties of parents, and beloved friends,
and relatives, are anticipating for them long life, &
enjoyment; are remove to the mansions above
is far beyond our comprehension.
I feal a great anxiety on acct of your dear
little babe
