My Dear George –
Returning at midnight on
Wednesday last for Seneca, I received your
first letter – but had not time to answer
it before leaving the next morning for
Jefferson County. On my arrival here
yesterday I find your second letter/ of
Aug 26 – which I have just time to
acknowledge today before going to Che-
mung County .
I suppose the first arrangement
the safest and most expedient thing that
could be done –Although I regret the
circumstances that renders it necessary – If
possible I will look in upon you at
Goshen in the course of the next six weeks
and will excuse the Deed – At first let
it rest.
It will be quite important that

you attended the Convention personally
and not by substitute – I do not know
what will be advisable. Things change
their aspect so often. But in some
contingencies which may happen it will
be very important that you be there.
We shall look for you here after
the Convention and we sincerely hope
that either Frances
or
Cousins Elizabeth and Mary will come
with you. We are just getting our
repairs along, so that by that time we
shall have space and room for them
although our house is now nearly uninhabita-
ble.
Affectionately
yours
William H. Seward
