I send you by todays mail the Extra from the Gospel Message an-
nouncing the destruction of St Peters Church on Sunday evening the
particulars are contained in the Extra - I also sent you a hand
bill calling upon the Republicans of this town to meet & cry the
Coronach over the fallen honor of Matty
The meeting attempted to be got up in this Village
for the purpose of gaining an expression of the feelings of Re-
publicans in relation to the reaction of the nomination of Martin
Van Buren nomination as Minster to England by the United
States Senate was a most lame and impotent affair - after
turning out all the officers from the state prison and most
persevering exertions on the part of the office holders about 50
assembled themselves together in the long Room of the Western
Exchange last evening. the gloom of sorrow was visible on
their visages, and and most truly was the assemblage
bore evident marks of feeling - most deeply feeling that
the event which they had met to deplore was to them a most
unfortunate one – but this feeling must have been heightened
by a conviction that in their sorrow the community felt no sym-
pathy – The truth is all attempts to create sympathy for the
disgraced minister will prove. and has proved abortive, the
people have known Van Buren as the father of a most pro-
scribing policy - they have long looked upon him with dis-
trust – they have doubts in his honesty his patriotism and feared
his selfish and narrow policy - the disclosure of his instructions
to Mr. McLane has confirmed all these fears- and reordered all
apprehensions of his dishonesty are now confirmed. and

strengthened into the most solemn conviction that he is neither
poetically honest nor in any way actuated by patriotic or
pure motives.
The Ex Senator GB was chairman of the meeting
perforce- old Ju. presented himself early with a view of
having that hand- but George would not award it to him
The first Judge trembles for his reappointment and his
characteristic servility is heightened into more by his
alarms. into , his fawning are the sport of
the Village, and seem to gain the contempt of all his
party- who are not yet so far debased as ^not^ to despise such pros-
tration -
A meeting will be had in this Village approving of the
rejection of Van Buren – and in my opinion it will be the
largest meeting ever had in this Village. Public opinion
will most triumphantly sustain the senate,- and no
voice will emanate from New York but that of approval
The Republican will be full of Glorification - and if
the Country papers speak out on the subject to have the
Journal copy their remarks-
If you get up a meeting in Albany let it go
forth as party measure but as based solely on
the anti National conduct & character of Matty
I speak advisedly only - The cry is up that will
hunt down Van Buren - Nullify the Rat I say
