New York Sept 27.
My dear Jennings,
The difficulty of securing the attendance of
the necessary parties delays the settlement of the details
of my business here, so that I now see no hope of leaving
New York before Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.
All however is right and going well.
After so long an absence and in the want of any infor-
mation from Chautauqua

, I am somewhat anxious
concerning affairs there. The political season is ap-
proaching and it is very important to us not to be
compromitted in the angry feeling, that may arise.
Knowing ^as you now do^ now everything about Matters general and
particular, it is submitted to you whether it is not
expedient to suspend all measures demonstrative
of force. Exercise your best judgment, in that I con –
fide. I was spent the last Tuesday at Florida
