New York May 1, 1838,
My dear Jennings,
You must have been surprised by my long
silence. But you have very little idea of the life I have led. None
of my associates has yet arrived, and that has formed an excuse
convenient and not altogther unreasonable for delay in the
preparation of my papers by the Am. Trust Co. and its offices.
Nevertheless all is right and though slowly my business does
go on towards its consummation, I cannot foresee when
I shall finish it but from present appearances it will
be two or three weeks before that joyous event. Meanwhile
Mr. Rumsey

’s business is postponed for mine because I can
not carry on two negotiations at once. You know nothing
of John Duer

’s mode of transacting business. He is the kindest
truest and most benevolent man in the world, but he is
overwhelmed with occupation. besides being the most
easy diverted from it. The good people of the city have
on their hands the business of making a candidate for
the C. M. of the State. This duty has been accelerated
by the accidental arrival here of three individuals
who have been respectively spoken of in that connection.
The debate has gone forward with spirit and earnestness
and it has brought me into greater notoriety than was
convenient or perhaps profitable. I cannot withhold
my own belief that so far as the People here and those here

from the country are concerned the sentiment is as favorable to
your views as you could desire.

I have been interrupted so often in writing this that I have
scarcely kept the thread of my story.
You will please continue to write here until you hear
to the contrary. Tell Mr. Height
