Governor Seward
Dear Sir
I learn

yesterday
that there is quite an excitement in that village
about the appointment of Master in Chancery
It appears that some few whig Lawyers have
signed a petition for James G Clinton
Name: James Clinton
Birth: 1804-01-02
Death: 1849-05-28
, and are
endeavouring to persuade Samuel W Eager
Name: Samuel Eager
Birth: 1789-04-08
Death: 1860-12-23
to
withdraw his application. If Eager should with-
draw his name, we will send you another.
Mr Thorne says the great body of the whig party
are violently opposed to Clinton. Had it not been
for Clinton and his friends we would have
obtained a majority in the County last fall
Clintons petition was circulated in Goshen for
whig signatures. I believe they could not prevail
upon anyone to sign it.
I write at the request of some of our
friends here and at Newburgh, as there are some
whigs on Clintons paper.
I was at your Fathers

on Wednesday they
are all as well as could be expected.
Yours Truly
