Thursday morning July 25
My dear Henry
I received your letter from Saratoga

Place

yesterday morning. I immediately wrote an answer
explaining why I had not written before, but
on reflection concluded not to send it fearing
you might think I had said some things
which were unkind. The truth is your unwon-
ted negligence about writing to me grieves and
disturbs me more than you can well imagine[ . ]

Supplied

Reason:

I have some difficulty in persuading myself at
all times that you are not somewhat indifferent
to one to whom you cannot afford to devote
ten or fifteen minutes in as many days.
I am not a believer in the entire supremacy of
your official duties, which perhaps you may be.
We are all well except myself. I gain
strength slowly, have been out of my room a
number of times, hope to be able to take
my meals with the family next week.
