Biography:
Mentioned in 18150908LMW_PTM1 where Mr Pettes was delivering letters from LMW and FMS while they were in school in Windsor, VT. "I should have written to papa but I have not time for Mr Pettes is going out of Town tomorrow." According to findagrave "Major John Pettes was the son of Capt. Joseph Pettes. He and Lucy Richards were married in Dorchester, Massachusetts Jan. 20, 1820. Dr. Thaddeus M. Harris officiated. Their son, William Richards Pettes died in Tallahassee, Florida February 23, 1881." There is also an odd note that appears to have been written long after 1815 by FMS on page 3 of this letter that reads "This gentleman had taken a decided warm & active part in defense of his country & was singled out by the refugees of N.J. as a subject of their vindicative rage." The only gentleman mentioned in the letter besides ExM is Pettes.
