Biography:
Mentioned by GWS in 18250521GWS_WHS1: "You have Lawyers, we have
Emmets, Hoffmans, Prices, &c &c..."
During this time, Josiah Ogden Hoffman and also his son, Ogden Hoffman, were practicing law in NYC. In his biography, Thurlow Weed mentions Ogden Hoffman in relation to the social scene at the time -- the lawyerly men would get together on Saturday evenings to network and drink. Josiah Ogden Hoffman married Mary Colden (1770-1797) and then Maria Fenno. Likely also related to lawyer Murray Hoffman.
From the Hoffman Genealogy: "Josiah Ogden, second child of Nicholas Hoffman and Sarah Ogden, was born at Newark... He was admitted to the bar at an early age, and became a very distinguished lawyer. He was one of the most eminent members of the New York Bar at the time when Hamilton, Kent, Scott, Emmet, Wells, and other celebrated jurists also adorned it. His forte was the examination of witnesses and the management of juries. He was president of the Philological Society, and rode at the head of that society in the procession on the celebration of the adoption of the Feral Constitution in ew York in 1788..."
