Biography:
  • Mentioned in 18330223ExM_WHS1: "I have just received a Letter from my friend Elisha Williams who has always been a real friend... he has as you know been unfortunate in property concerns, that the most of his remaining property lies in & about Waterloo at which place he and his family will pemanently re- side after this Winter".
  • Son of Colonel Ebenezer Williams and Jerusha Porter. Admitted to the bar in 1793, when he removed to Spencertown, in Columbia county. In 1795 he married the daughter of his former guardian, Miss Lucia Grosvenor. They had 5 children together.
  • Removed to Hudson in 1799. NYS Assemblyman in 1801. "He was president of the Bank of Columbia at Hudson for a number of years, and a large owner in the institution. Through some of his transactions he became possessed of a tract of land embracing all or a large portion of the present site of the village of Waterloo, in Seneca county. From these lands he realized large returns ; so that by this means and through his very lucrative professional business he be- came what was at that time considered a wealthy man. Some of the last years of his life were passed upon his property in Seneca county."
  • Later in life, he was very ill. During a respite, visited NYC and there died of apoplexy in the home of Mr. Grosvenor, only months after ExM writes to Henry asking him to help his "friend Elisha Williams" during his time of "property concerns".
