George, attending the New York High School, brags to Henry: "You have Doctors, you have no Doctors Hunters. You have Lawyers, we have Emmets, Hoffmans, Prices, &c &c." The Hoffman family was extremely prominent and expansive. David Murray Hoffman is related to Josiah Ogden Hoffman, Ogden Hoffman Jr., and Ogden Hoffman Jr., but the exact relation is difficult to determine. I believe they may be cousins many times removed. In any case, these men were all buried in New York's Saint Mark's Church-In-The-Bowery, a Hoffman plot. If curious, see the readily helpful "Genealogy of the Hoffman family: descendants of Martin Hoffman, with biographical notes," and perhaps you can determine the relation. In any case, these men together practiced law in New York city during the early 1800s, along with lawyers John Duer, Emmets, Prices, Ogdens, Blatchford, Griffin, etc. David Murray was the first son of Martin Hoffman and Beulah Murray. David Murray first married Frances Amelia Burrall and then Mary Murray Ogden. (Expected to be a distant relation of David Murray's since her mother was a Murray. Her mother was Susan Murray and her father William Ogden.) From his New York Times obituary: "Ex. Judge Murray Hoffman died yesterday at Flushing, Long Island, in the eighty-seventh year of his age. He was born in the City Sept. 29, 1791, and after a preparatory academical course entered Columbia College, from which he was graduated in 1809. He then began the study of the law, and after his admission to the Bar he practiced for many years with credit to his name and a lucrative return for his industry. In March, 1839, he became Assistant Vice-Chancellor, and held that office until 1843. After the death of Judge Jones, of the Superior Court, Judge Hoffman was elected by the Whigs in November, 1853, to be his successor. He held the office until 1861..." (see link below).
