Ulysses Freeman Doubleday was involved in newspaper publishing and political writing. According to the "History of Cayuga County," he bought the newspaper the Cayuga Patriot in 1819 and published it until Sept. 21 1831, when he was elected to Congress as a Jacksonian. He served in office from 1831-1833 and 1835-1837. In 1845, while the Agent of the Auburn Prison, Doubleday again became sole owner of the Cayuga Patriot, but sold it in late 1846/early 1847 because he was moving to IL. He also maintained a bookstore during the 1820s-1830s in Auburn, NY and co-published The Gospel Advocate from 1828-1831.
