Director of the State Bank of Albany, director of the Albany Insurance Company. Member of the Albany Common Council. Trustee and president, Albany Medical College. Member of the Whig Political Party. Last mayor chosen by Albany Common Council, January 21, 1839. First mayor of Albany elected by popular vote, December 30, 1839. Elected mayor again, on May 5, 1840. Father of Henry Reed Rathbone, who grappled with John Wilkes Booth in Ford's Theatre, April 14, 1865. Rathbone's memorial is considered to be "a counterpart to the tomb of Scipio."

Rathbone and WHS visit many places and people in Albany after Seward loses his first race for governor, and Rathbone introduces his new wife to WHS. First mayor of Albany elected by popular vote, December 30, 1839. Elected mayor again, on May 5, 1840." He was elected first Mayor of Albany on Whig ticket and defeated Democrat Erastus Corning.
