Biography:
"Kossuth, Lajos, Hungarian patriot and statesman, who tried unsuccessfully to re-gain full independence for Hungarian republic in the mid-1800s. Kossuth was born in Monok, Hungary (then part of Austria). In 1841 he became editor of a magazine advocating political reform and an independent legislature for Hungary. In 1847 Kossuth succeeded in winning a separate constitution for Hungary within the Austrian Empire. In 1849 he was named leader of the newly declared Hungarian Republic. The Hungarian forces were eventually crushed after the Russian Army intervened on the Austrian side. Kossuth resigned and fled to Turkey. He spent the last 45 years of his life in exile in USA, England and in Italy, tirelessly promoting his ideal of Hungarian independence and Civil liberties for people occupied and exploited..." Lajos had 4 sisters: Zsuzsanna Kossuth (1817-1854)- Hungarian freedom fighter, Lujza Kossuth, Emilia Kossuth Zulavsky (18171112-18600629)- buried in New York City, and Karolina Kossuth. He married Terezia Meszlenyi in 1841 and they remained together until her death in 1863. Their son Ferenc was for a short time the president of the Hungarian Party of Independence.
