Biography:
Thomas B. Gunning was a prominent Union dentist from New York City. During the Civil War, he and a Confederate dentist, Dr. James Baxter Bean, simultaneously invented the interdental splint, yet being on opposite sides of the war were unaware of the other's work. "Gunning had mended fractured jaws since 1840 and had successfully treated Secretary of State William H Seward for a broken jaw with an interdental splint in 1865."
