Biography: 
Varnum was born in Dracutt, Massachusetts. He was the son of Senator J.B. Varnum, studied at Westford Academy, was a clerk in War Department in Washington, D.C. in 1810. He served as an Indian agent for the Northwest (1811-12); Postmaster to the Northern army (1813-14); for several years agent for J.J. Astor of New York; then established dry good business in N.Y.; firm names: Varnum & Grosvenc Varnum, Fuller & Co. ; Varnum, Graham & Bebb; with unimpaired credit even during; the bad time in 1836-37.

Biography: 
Mentioned in 18340106BJS_WHS1: "Varnum seemed disposed to look into the allegation that if time was given the costs would be less: but from all I could gather, I am of opinion that he will believe the use of what the may now obtain, so valuable is ready cash, will be better to him than what might be rendered a few months hence with mitigated costs." The letter refers to a legal case WHS was involved in, Wakeman v. Grover.
