Hart was the sheriff involved in the very exciting imprisonment and suicide case of John Caldwell Colt. He served as "sheriff of NYC and the county of New York for three years, commencing on the 1st day of January, 1841..."
Death date extrapolated from The New York Times, issue Dec. 19, 1880: "The funeral of ex-Sheriff Monmouth Bloomer Hart took place yesterday from St. Stephen Protestant Episcopal Church, the Rev. Abraham B. Hart, Rector of the church, and nephew to the deceased, officiating. The services were very simple. None but very intimate and personal friends of Mr Hart were present."
