Edward Dickinson Baker

Biography
He was a US Representative for Illinois and later a US Senator for Oregon. Close friend of AxL; they served as law partners together in Springfield, IL and one of AxL's sons was named after Baker. Instrumental in keeping slavery out of western states. Only sitting senator to be killed during the Civil war; died at Battle of Ball's Bluff in VA leading a Union army regiment. The Union's loss had a large impact on military affairs and Washington (because Baker was a sitting senator).
